Gas Kimishima was born in Japan but has been living in the UK for nearly 30 years. After various careers as a fashion designer and art dealer, he decided to make pottery but took it up seriously after meeting the potter and magazine editor Murray Fieldhouse. He visited Japan in 1992 and met the masterpotter Furutani Michio in Shigaraki, whose influence on his work was life-changing. He designs and builds kilns near his home in Hertfordshire. For the Festival he will be building a mini Anagama kiln in the two weeks leading up to the festival for a long slow firing to be completed over the weekend.
