“I make sculptural pieces based on the geometry of natural forms. I currently use porcelain as my main material. The sculptural forms are constructed slowly over a period of weeks or months, and fired a number of times during the making process.
My work combines regular pattern with the characteristics of fractal forms from nature. The finished forms are a result of an intuitive response to the direction that the pattern takes as well as the irregularity in the handmade elements of the pattern.
I am interested in the contrasts and similarities between traditional Western aesthetics, which sought to portray beauty through classical geometry, and Eastern/Buddhist aesthetics of beauty, which celebrate the imperfection. I feel that the common area recognised by both of these traditions lies between classical symmetry in regular geometry and the characteristic of self-similarity in irregular geometry, that is; the beauty of harmonious form created by the repetition of proportion.
My hope is that my work communicates a sense of energy and life through a combination of the use of abstracted pattern and geometry from natural forms.
I use drawings/photographs/collage etc. of natural forms as well as research into the history and psychology of the aesthetics of form and pattern to develop my work. I also have a large amount of material that I draw on from my research during my MA studies at the Crawford College of Art and Design”
