PARTS AND PIECES – THROWING SCULPTURAL FORMS ON THE WHEEL
Virginia Scotchie will be running a 4 day course at West Dean College after the 2013 festival from the 1th – 4th July.
The course will have a focus of making various shapes and objects using 3-5 pounds of clay on the wheel. These forms will include closed forms, doughnut shapes, cones, and throwing small parts and pieces off of the hump. Students will be shown how to assemble, dissect and re-connect the forms they create on the wheel to make sculptural objects.
The aim of the course is to work with the students on their exploration of forms that can be created using the wheel as a tool for creative investigation of new shapes and sculptural ideas. The class will learn how to throw small parts and pieces for their 3-5 pound main sculptural forms, which will then be added on at the leather hard stage. This process will employ throwing “off the hump”.
